Built largely by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 20th century, R.B. Winter State Park lies in the heart of Bald Eagle State Forest in central Pennsylvania. Adding to the historic flavor, many of the trails are old logging railroad lines.
The area centers around Halfway Dam Lake along Route 192 with roads and trails spreading up the mountains from there. The state leaves McCall Dam Road, the main thoroughfare through the area, unplowed in winter, so skiers and skishoers can enjoy it. Visit the overlook at the top of the Nature Trail for an exquisite view, and then enjoy an exhilarating descent to the base area along the road. From the road, you can try Boiling Springs and Jamboree Trails, among others.
Because trails here are rocky, explaining why mountain bikers love it, it takes a good dump of snow to cover many of them. But when that happens, the park becomes a playground. Just get there before the snowmobilers pack them down.
