Old Forge and Inlet, New York
Drive along Route 12 and 28 north out Utica, New York, and you eventually come to the town of Old Forge. You might call this the southwestern gateway to the Adirondacks. Keep going east and you follow the Fulton Chain Lakes to the town of Inlet. This area boasts a handful of skishoe-friendly trail networks.
Near Old Forge, McCauley Mountain Ski Area has a cross-country ski area off its parking lot with trails crisscrossing the base of a mountain. Here you can get good ups and downs and meander between trails to give the skishoes a workout.
At the other end of the area, the town of Inlet has its Fern Park on Fern Mountain, which has trails similar to those at McCauley Mountain. The park has an open slope, and every year, the town holds a sledding contest with contestants concocting all kinds of contraptions out of wood, metal, and cardboard to get down the slope. You’ll get many laughs watching them crash and spin their way down.
Venturing away from the towns, you can find a host of trails such as one around Moss Lake and the Truck Trail, an out-and-back with a few spurs off it. After a day on the trails, stop at the Old Mill restaurant in Old Forge for a drink by the fireplace and a hearty meal.
