High Point State Park, Sussex, New Jersey
When you motor along I-84 near the junction of Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey, you see a monument pointing in the air at the top of a mountain in the distance, looking much like the Washington Monument. This marks High Point State Park, located at the highest point in New Jersey. Because it sits at the top of a mountain, the park gets more snow than surrounding lands near the Delaware River.
At the heart of the park, you’ll find the High Point Cross Country Ski Center with Hans Petter Karlsen serving as director. From there, a network of trails loop outward. Skishoes offer an advantage here because nearly half the trail mileage is for snowshoes only, meaning skishoes can access them. Most notably, the Monument Trail climbs to the monument (you can climb to the top of it when it’s open in warmer weather) and then goes on a long loop. Another trail where skishoes may come in handy is Steeny Kill trail, which descends to Steeny Kill Lake on a modearate-grade switchback trail. It’s a ski trail, but under certain snow conditions, skishoes work better on the steep section.
